Dr. Dwayne Kowalchuk, DMD

The Creative Side of Medicine

Born and raised in Calgary, Dr. K started on the path to becoming a dentist during his undergraduate years. He earned two degrees — one in art and another in biology. He knew that he wanted to get into some aspect of health care and liked that he could help people and put his diverse skills to good use.

“I thought that the marriage of my art experience and my biological sciences experience would work perfectly with dentistry.”

Travelling Far From Home

To expand his horizons in a new country, Dr. K attended Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He wanted to go someplace different and get a new perspective at a school that provided its students with a well-rounded education. Dr. K completed additional work in hours, practice and experience that many other dental schools don’t require.

Dr. K served patients early on in his program, doing community work, completing internships at different dental practices and seeing patients at community health centres. He and his fellow dental students worked not only as dentists but participated in the roles of dental assistants and dental hygienists to assist each other during treatment.

Working in health centres and community clinics gave Dr. K experience with many diverse patients and procedures, and he learned how to help all different types of patients.

He graduated top of his class (Summa Cum Laude) and was Valedictorian for the Class of 2006, then returned home to Calgary to practice. His broad education and experience continues to benefit our patients today.

“I got a chance to see dentistry from all different sides, not just from the doctor’s point of view and skill set.”

Solving Your Dental Problems

“The most fulfilling part of dentistry is solving our patients’ problems. I enjoy finding solutions for their smile, bite and oral health. It’s satisfying to see a patient come in with a concern, then having them leave with a plan in place to tackle their problem.”

Dr. K completes many courses each year to stay up-to-date on the latest developments in dentistry. He believes that it’s important that he and his team constantly develop their skills. He is a member of:

  • The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD)
  • The Canadian Dental
  • Association (CDA)
  • The Alberta Dental Association + College (ADA+C)
  • The Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation (PPNF)

Life Outside the Office

When he isn’t busy with patients, Dr. K spends time with his family and several charitable and community organizations. Recently married, he and his wife have a total of seven children and a growing number of precious grandchildren.

He’s involved with the Alzheimer Society of Calgary, the Smiles For Life charity, the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, the Women In Need Society (WINS), Operation Christmas Child and the 65 Roses Ladies Golf Classic fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

Previous charities close to Dr. K’s heart include the J/P Haitian Relief Organization and Plan International Canada’s “Because I am a Girl” program, where he has sponsored several children and clean water programs in South America.

Dr. K loves traveling, exercising and outdoor activities such as hiking or camping. A self-described “ex-sugar-aholic” and now “sugar-free bio-hacker”, Dr. K. has started incorporating his knowledge and experience with nutrition, sleep science and anti-aging science, into his own life and that of his patients – writing blogs and articles to help his patients maximize their quality of life and healthiness. He’s a foodie, an avid reader and film fan, and frequently goes to see live cultural events such as concerts and comedy shows.
